The Boss Saves A Life

So, i'm just guessing that everyone is aware of the recent passing of legendary Yankees owner George Steinbrenner..but this may be a story that you have not heard..38 years ago, Ray Negron was a 16 year old boy who was caught up in the street life of the Bronx..one day him and his two cousins decided that they were going to graffiti the side of Yankee Stadium..Steinbrenner saw them doing it and ran up on the three of them, while two of them got away, Negron was caught and put in a holding cell inside the stadium..he was held in there for an hour before Steinbrenner came back and told him that they were short a bat boy for tonight's game, gave him a uniform, and had him in the locker room and on the field by game time..their relationship grew from there..Steinbrenner served as a great father figure to Negron, and most likely saved his live, considering that his cousins both died within the next ten years (one from AIDS, the other from a drug related murder)..after that day, Negron worked for the Yankees as Steinbrenner's special advisor and was his best friend/son up until he passed away on tuesday..he said, with tears in his eyes, "Seeing his compassion for the less privileged let me know that I had a shot as a minority. He gave me life . . . he gave me life."...

R.I.P. to "The Boss".
