The Most Coveted Prize In Sports
First off, i would like to say congratulations to the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks..winning their first cup in 49 years..great to see them beat up on those Filthadelphians!
The Stanley Cup Playoffs are my favorite time of the sports year, so i am sad to see them go, it was a reallll good one this year though, only about 300 days till next year's playoffs.
Here are a few facts about the Stanley Cup that not everyone may know..its pretty interesting stuff:
-All players, coaches, managers, and staff get their name engraved on the cup.
-The cup is about 3 feet long, weights approximately 35 pounds, and is made of silver and nickel alloy.
-There are 5 bands around the cup which the name gets put on, when the lowest band gets filled up, they take the one from the top out and add a new one to the bottom, so they will never run out of space..once they take those bands out they put them out for display at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
-Tradition has it that no player should ever touch the cup before they have rightfully won it themselves.
-Each player of the winning team is allowed to spend one day with the cup and do whatever they want with it..players have gotten their children baptized in it, climbed mountains with it, and even fed their dog out of it.
-There are two Stanley Cups, one which sits on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame and the other which is passed around to all the players and shit.
-Dickie Moore won the cup 6 times and his name spelled differently 5 on it (D. Moore, Richard Moore, R. Moore, Dickie Moore, Rich Moore).
-The cup has also been mistreated a bunch of times..in 2008 Kris Draper's newborn daughter defecated inside the cup, only for it to be thoroughly cleaned and drank out of by Kris Draper himself later that night..and in 1994 Mike Richter took the cup to McSorely's Old Ale House in New York City, locked the doors for 45 minutes and let fans hoist the cup over their heads and drink from it, the next day the cup had to be sent back for repairs to its base.
Props to JBlatt for the information..also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
